I thought she was beautiful, with her long dark hair, almond shaped eyes, and Michigan bough. I felt lucky to meet her, and even luckier that she would be in the second grade with me that school year. She will forever be my friend.

She worked for the women’s right to vote in her youth, and was “Rosie the Riveter” during WWII. Sitting on her porch, in a cloud of cigarette smoke, I learn more than in any classroom…and discovered more about myself than you can imagine.

He came from Lebanon to attend High School in West Virginia. How strange it must have been for him in our world of hillbillies, homecomings…mountains and miners. He signed my yearbooks in Arabic. 27 years later, I ponder what he had to say.

The squeak of gyms shoes on a basketball court, and I can see him in his teenaged glory, curls and sweat flying, dribbling down the floor. His team had as hard a time winning games as I had winning his affection. Neither was successful.

I remember his snowy white hair and eyes with the sparkle of mischief I see in my own. Although he could not physically stand, it made him no less a man. When he held me, I felt enveloped by his love courage and strength.
